Curriculum
“Transforming lives through inspirational learning.”
We deliver a thematic, knowledge-rich curriculum that incorporates experiential learning wherever possible. Through engaging themes, meaningful experiences and high expectations, we prepare pupils for success in an ever-changing world.
Our curriculum is underpinned by our 6 Cs:
· Character – developing resilience, perseverance and confidence
· Citizenship – understanding and contributing positively to the wider world
· Collaboration – working effectively with others
· Communication – becoming confident speakers, writers and digital learners
· Creativity – thinking imaginatively and innovatively
· Critical Thinking – questioning, analysing and applying knowledge
We want our pupils to become reflective, independent and compassionate learners who are ready for the next stage of education and beyond.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is carefully designed to:
· Deliver the requirements of the National Curriculum (2014)
· Build clear progression in knowledge and skills from Reception to Year 6
· Respond to the needs, interests and strengths of each cohort
· Provide memorable experiences beyond the classroom
· Encourage curiosity, enquiry and real-world learning
· Promote equality, inclusion and aspiration for all pupils
Themes are planned across year groups and often include trips, visitors, practical activities and enrichment opportunities to deepen learning and engagement.
Core subjects such as English and Mathematics are taught daily, while foundation subjects are linked meaningfully through thematic learning where appropriate.
Teaching and Learning
At The Pines, we believe children learn best when they are actively engaged. Our teaching promotes:
· High expectations for all learners
· Practical and experiential learning opportunities
· Speaking, listening and vocabulary development
· Problem solving and critical thinking
· Creativity and collaboration
· Reflection and independence
Teachers adapt learning to meet the needs of pupils while ensuring progression and challenge for all.
Reading, Writing and Mathematics
Reading is central to our curriculum. We aim to develop fluent, confident readers with a genuine love of books and storytelling. Phonics is taught daily in EYFS and Key Stage 1 through a structured approach to early reading and spelling.
Writing is inspired through quality texts, drama, discussion and purposeful experiences. Pupils learn to write confidently for a range of audiences and purposes.
In Mathematics, we use a mastery approach to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking and apply mathematical knowledge in different contexts.
Wider Curriculum
Our wider curriculum is ambitious, creative and inclusive. Through subjects such as Science, Humanities, Computing, PE, RE, PSHE and the Expressive Arts, pupils develop knowledge, skills and cultural understanding while making meaningful links across learning.
We place great importance on enrichment opportunities, including educational visits, STEM experiences, visitors, performances and sporting activities, helping children access experiences they may not otherwise encounter.
Equality and Inclusion
We are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum that reflects and celebrates diversity. We believe all learners are of equal value and strive to remove barriers so every child can achieve success and feel a sense of belonging.
Assessment and Monitoring
Assessment is an ongoing part of teaching and learning and helps teachers identify strengths, next steps and areas for support. Curriculum leaders and senior leaders regularly monitor the quality, breadth and impact of the curriculum to ensure high standards and continuous improvement.
The Impact of Our Curriculum
Our curriculum enables pupils to:
· Make strong progress from their starting points
· Develop confidence, resilience and independence
· Enjoy learning and attend school positively
· Speak enthusiastically about their learning
· Apply their knowledge and skills across subjects
· Be well prepared for the next stage of education and life beyond school
At The Pines, we are proud to provide a curriculum that not only develops academic achievement, but also nurtures the values, character and aspirations children need to thrive in the future.
